World War I was about a 4 year war. It started on July 28, 1914 and ended November 11, 1918. World War I was also known as The Great War since it was so big and involved so many countries. The war had started after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand the King of Austria-Hungary and his wife. The United States became involved because we had treaties with other countries that if one of us were to get in a war the other would help out. World War I exposed a lot of new technologies for fighting. There were new weapons being used and new ways of fighting because this was the first war that was no longer fought on land, but at sea too.
The two sides were called Allies or Entente and the Central Powers. The United States was apart of the Allies side. The Allies consisted mostly of France, Great Britain, Italy and Russia. The Central Powers side was mostly made up of Austria-Hungary(the Habsburg Empire), Germany, and the Ottoman Empire(Turkey). Japan saw a chance to take over German colonies so the joined that Allies in the war. The end of the war left the destruction of three empires and part of Germany destroyed as well.
Causalities throughout the war:
Fun Fact: There was a British soldier named Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart who fought in both world wars was shot in the face, head, stomach, ankle, leg, hip, and ear, survived two plane crashes, tunneled out of a POW camp, bit off his own fingers when a doctor refused to amputate them, and said, "Frankly, I had enjoyed the War." about World War I.
