The Civil War was fought between to North and the South over Slavery. The North was against it while the South was for it and wanted it to continue. The South was really big into farming especially cotton farming and wanted slaves for cheap or free labor. During the time in 1865 when the war officially began the president at the time was Abraham Lincoln and he was siding with the North and was against Slavery. The South had elected their own president since they no longer wanted to be apart of the U.S. if Lincoln was president. The mans name was Jefferson Davis. The South called themselves the Confederates. They even had a different flag from the North which was America's flag at the time.
Even though the North had won the war and slaves were now free they were still discriminated against which was another thing that society had to try and change. That could not be changed with another war, because they would always continue to try people how they wanted.
